What is Hysteroscopy Treatment?
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to closely examine the cervix and uterus. It is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as abnormal bleeding, cysts, and fibroids. The procedure involves using a hysteroscope, a thin tube-like instrument, to view the inside of the uterus.
Why is Hysteroscopy done?
Hysteroscopy is performed to evaluate uterine health and address various uterine conditions. Since it is a minor surgical procedure, patients typically recover quickly. It is often recommended for women with fibroids located within the uterine cavity.
Preparation for Hysteroscopy Treatment:
Hysteroscopy can be conducted in a hospital or doctor’s clinic. Patients are given anaesthesia to numb the cervix, with the type of anaesthesia determined by the doctor. Medications may be administered for relaxation, and dilators may be used to open the cervix. A speculum is used to keep the vagina open, allowing the hysteroscope to be inserted through the cervix. Once inserted, a gas or liquid such as saline is released into the uterus to expand it for better visibility. The hysteroscope enables the doctor to examine the uterus lining and the opening of the fallopian tubes. If surgery is necessary, small instruments are inserted through the hysteroscope.
What is the Procedure of Hysteroscopy Surgery?
Following the surgery, individuals are typically well enough to drive soon after, unless they received general anaesthesia. Mild cramping or bleeding may occur in the days following the procedure, along with remnants of the procedure’s liquid, which usually dissipate within 24 hours. Painkillers are often prescribed to manage any discomfort.
As a precaution, it’s advisable to abstain from sexual activity for at least two weeks post-procedure. Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided by the doctor upon discharge.
Results/ Post-Procedure:
Hysteroscopy is commonly performed on an outpatient basis, requiring minimal post-operative care. It can effectively address uterine conditions that may hinder conception and aid in diagnosing unexplained bleeding or spotting in postmenopausal women.
