FAQ

Does IVF guarantee a 100% success rate?

IVF does not ensure a 100% success guarantee, but indeed it improves your fertility to a higher level. The IVF success rate is determined based on age, egg, sperm quality, implantation failure, the quality of the embryo, the health of the uterus, patient lifestyle, and any other comprehensive fertility problems. IVF guarantees improvement of conception chances, but in some cases, with multiple cycles, the pregnancy possibilities also increase. Therefore, this treatment is an effective way to treat infertility.

2. At what age can one be considered for successful IVF?

Women belonging to the under-35 age group likely have higher success rates of around 40% to 50% every cycle. Due to high-tech advancements in IVF technology, the success rate of live birth becomes 60% in a single egg retrieval cycle. Even within the 35-37 age group, the success rate stands around 35%. In certain cases, with a single-cell embryo per cycle, it can increase up to 40% also. But after this age, the downfall begins; the quality of the egg and the implantation rate decline. The success rate drops by a large margin after 40 years, to 15% to 20% per cycle.

3. How many eggs are required for successful IVF?

Generally, 10 to 12 mature eggs provide the best chance of producing one normal, healthy embryo for transfer. Among many women with 12 mature eggs, 65% of successful pregnancies with a single embryo transfer can be achieved. However, individual outcomes may vary. If you’re looking for twin children, 24 mature eggs would be much more likely to get successful results. With three normal embryos, the chance of pregnancy goes up to 95%. Therefore, egg retrieval is not the only factor; mature eggs are beneficial. If 20 eggs are retrieved, but only 15 are mature, then the treatment bears a loss or attrition of 5 eggs.

4. How many cycles will be necessary to have a successful pregnancy?

One to three cycles are required to achieve a successful pregnancy in the majority of patients. The cumulative success rate reaches around 60%-80% by the third cycle. On your first IVF cycle, the success rate highly depends on your ovarian reserve, as it decreases with age. Hence, if you are within the age group of 30 to 35, there is a high chance that you can get pregnant successfully in your first or second attempt. But when you are between the 40 to 42 years age bracket, then you might need 3 to 4 cycles since the success rate drops to 10% to 20%.

5. Which is the most risky stage of IVF?

The last stage of IVF embryo transfer is the most critical step. It is the primary determining factor for the success of IVF. But multiple other factors are responsible for its success rate. In several cases, it has been seen that even if a clinic has a good embryologist, the patient has a proper endometrium, and adequate luteal support is fostered, if the embryo is not appropriately placed, it does not develop and leads to failure of IVF. In this stage, the endometrial cavity needs to be properly traced to ensure embryo injection in the right place and at the right speed, without withdrawing or reversing the catheter. Moreover, the loading method of the embryos into the catheter must be correct since the volume of medium transferred during loading must be precise to prevent IVF failure and ectopic pregnancy.

6. Is an IVF pregnancy safe after 12 weeks?

Yes, 12 weeks after IVF pregnancy is safe because you step into the 2nd trimester, where notable risks are not observed, but you need to take care always. In this stage, miscarriage risks decline, and beyond this, the placenta and the heartbeat of the baby develop. This means that the foetus moves from the embryonic stage and enters the foetal stage. After 12 weeks, between 13 and 28 weeks is the most relaxing time with minimized complications but full care.
